Few days back while waiting at an Airport (India) , My old friend , whom I met by chance after a long time , commented : ” why are you becoming so unsocial ! stay connected ” before rushing to catch his flight to Delhi .
It took me few moments to realize what he meant by that .
we are so engrossed in our social platforms coveting small appreciative gestures from known& unknown people , groups, circles that we have changed our notion of what is called being social or unsocial !
The ever increasing insecurity & loneliness within , forcing us to get contented with a response smiley, a like, a thumb up sign , a comment on our various postings -photos or a write up : how silly or unqualified those comments may be . The never ending desire to get noticed or engaged any how resorting to a ” cut & paste ” , ” forwarding ” modes – is becoming so addictive ( I am no exception either) that we are failing to spend time with our kids or the old parents , the neighborhood or the people who need us most , drifting daily from our rationality & conscience and in the process accentuating our ego , greed and insensitivity.
Is it a trend , a wave of our social behavioral patterns in response to a changing times ? Are we trying to make a mark with an independent bent of mind for a fulfilling life ? Or we are finding ourselves so solitary that we find solace from others judging us when we continuously go on projecting us what we are not ! Are we falling prey to a virtual world of ” Likes ” or conversely showing our inabilities to take on ” dislikes ” ? How often we are liked by a needy poor man next door or a deprived kid on the street or a poor childhood friend or an unknown senior citizen looking out for help , actually ?
Don’t know whether we are becoming social or unsocial ..
” My time ” – a personal space , spending time with ourselves silently after a day’s long hectic life ( where the turbulence of mind is relatively less ) , which used to be there with some people earlier , is now hijacked by the smart phones . Every body seems to be in a hurry to preach others , provide different tips on everything under sun : who will be executing these tips & idealistic advisories , no body knows .With no time left for ” My time ” , the chance to find peace within , to look back, to think over , to introspect , to consciously try polishing our thought processes , affecting us in our materialistic life-is fast becoming extinct !
True , the social platforms & staying connected to them have their benefits for all of us in more than one ways in our day to day life , but how much is too much , where do we draw a line , put a brake : is a subjective matter based on our priorities .
How about talking about our staying truly connected ..to the God ..the supreme Connector , away from material contamination , which is the very purpose of our life..connecting to him by spreading love, compassion, empathy among the people around us by being a source of blessing for them . Still thinking: let us turn sixty years to do that .. knowing fully well that the death may knock our door any time ?
Months back , in Bhubaneswar (India) , while discussing leisurely with Mr Das , I discovered a new pursuit with him . A business man by profession , he spends his disposable time ( or he carves out ) passionately in the Government Hospital of the city , volunteering to help the poor , needy , destitute.. in terms of medicines, blood donation, monetary help ( to the extent he can afford ) and his time & energy .
He thinks it is worthwhile to try & see smiles in the face of those unprivileged people, away from the so called social spaces .
What do you think ?
